HOT STANDBY WIRELESS LINK for RAILWAY BLOCK PROVISIONING
using UFSBI, AXLE COUNTER & BLOCK TELEPHONE

In certain situations in Indian Railways, a suitable optical / cable / Railway owned permanent microwave infrastructure is not available for carrying Block information / safety information. To mitigate this situation UFSBI & Axel counters have been installed with Modified Digital Microwave Radio operating in 2.4 GHz license free band.

With configuration using proper encryption and password it can be effectively used for regular block operation and especially for emergency management when cable / OFC disruptions happen. RDSO has given their recommendations based on which the same has been installed in various locations in IR.

With certain recommendations from RDSO enhancing the security of the radio link for closed communication system the same has been deployed with DELTRON UFSBI & CEL Axel counters in N.F. Railway, SECR, ECoR & ECR

The UFSBI is subsequently connected to the communication media, i.e. Microwave Radio directly through RS232C data port DB9 connector (@ 2.4 Kbps). Axel counters are also connected to the Radio through Rs232 using suitable convertors .

Advantages of using UFSBI & 2.4 GHz band Digital Radio in Block Working:

  • Radio Block working can largely reduce the passenger and goods train detention owing to Block failures due to cable cut working as a standby link.

  • In a hilly terrain or a busy section where gauge conversion / doubling work is going on, cable cuts due to miscreant activity or due to engineering works occur quite
frequently. The repairing time is also quite long, as locating copper cable faults is difficult. Further since, in most cases the Optical Fiber cable and Copper conductor is laid on same duct, as such mostly they get cut together. Therefore, the UFSBI if used on this radio can provide a truly redundant path of continuing Block operations, without any train detention, till the block cable is rectified

  • Microwave Radio used in the scheme provides an alternative method of secured inter-station voice communication, in addition to Block Telephone and VHF sets.

  • Radio based Block working can prove very cost effective for long Block section, since the LOS distance is generally much lower than inter-station cable length, which is
generally laid beside the railway track.

  • Could also be a very good solution for IBS huts as a back up redundant link. Reliability proven through installations at N.F. Railway , SECR, ECoR & ECR

BLOCK working over Wireless for connecting UFSBI, AXEL COUNTER & BLOCK TELEPHONE

Large Area Wireless PA , VHF Networks/ Tunnel Communication Networks

Lilac has extensive expertise in wide area captive networks and has developed inhouse capability to design & implement systems catering to various needs.

Some sample projects which Lilac can implement are as follows

a) Wireless Large Area Public Address Systems

Public address system which would be based on wireless & work in parallel to the existing voice communication systems in open areas or through the leaky cable in Tunnels, Confined Space & Disaster Management Networks. The system has two main components

Central Command & Control Console

The Heart of PA system is the Central Command & Control Console which will act as an control and management unit for audio distribution of public address and call box intercom communication. This Console will be interconnected into a VHF /3G/4 G system which can operate through existing VHF networks or through 3G / 4G cloud and also can be made interoperable with any existing leaky feeder systems in Tunnels. This Console acts as a Command Centre and can select any Public address speaker. The console can make announcement either as a system wide broadcast mode or to an individual PA speaker system/ Node. The console can also receive voice calls from Remote Call
boxes

Remote Call Boxes

Remote Call Boxes are field units equipped with PA Horns/Speakers, Audio Amplifier, with Talkback facility to the Control Centre.

b) Underground communication Networks

Lilac has the expertise to design & implement underground /tunnel communication networks using duty VHF Band Repeaters, or Optical Fibre based Distributed Antenna System (DAS) and other necessary equipments and provide communication channels to provide wireless communication inside and outside the tunnels including the tunnel edits. Wireless Communication inside the tunnel will be covered by leaky cable.

Simple repeater based systems or DAS equipment & POI based systems both can be designed & implemented based on Tunnel size & customer requirements.
